Insulin + Blood Sugar Balance with Ember Peters

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease experienced by more than 10% of adults in North America and its precursor, insulin resistance, is even more prevalent. This class will expand on the pathophysiology of insulin resistance to include interconnections with hormones, the liver, the thyroid, stress, systemic oppression and more. While the dominant medical paradigm focuses on symptoms like weight gain, a holistic approach can address underlying root causes and offer whole person support through a client-centred, body-positive and harm reduction approach. From this lens, we will focus on framing realistic and empowering goals, and core principles for building accessible and effective herbal protocols. Ember will present a case study example to demonstrate these principles.

Teacher: Ember Peters

Melatonin & Circadian Rhythm

Melatonin and circadian rhythms are often misunderstood. In this class, we'll review the roles of endogenous melatonin, including it's effects outside of the sleep/wake cycle. You'll learn how circadian rhythms connect us to the rhythms of the earth, and how we can support healthy rhythms in our clients. We will also discuss how, when, and why you may recommend supplemental melatonin to clients, including dosing strategies to consider and important safety considerations.

Perimenopause

When we envision perimenopause, we often think of the most common symptoms: hot flashes, brain fog, erratic periods, difficulty sleeping, and more. However, the process of going through perimenopause holds meaning well beyond these external manifestations. It is a time of deepening, re-evaluation, transformation, and growth. In this class, we’ll learn about the physiological processes that explain perimenopausal symptoms, and how herbs and nutrition can support these changes.

Bitters + GI Hormones with Guido Masé

We are beginning to appreciate the sophisticated integrating functions the GI tract provides: moving beyond paracrine secretions that govern local production of digestive juices, we'll explore more systemic effects that have their roots in the enteroendocrine system. This network of hormone-secreting cells present throughout our digestive system is exquisitely sensitive to the chemistry we ingest, and responds with signals that coordinate functions like motility and secretion, along with more systemic behaviors like appetite and satiety, hepatic function, local immune responses, and even mood.

Many enteroendocrine cells express T2Rs, or bitter taste type-2 receptors, on their luminal surfaces. This means that traditional herbal bitters such as gentian, Andrographis, artichoke, quinine, and even dandelion can modulate the hormonal signals that originate in the enteroendocrine system. This allows for clinically-relevant interventions that are especially useful to coordinate smooth GI tract activity and impact appetite and satiety (all crucial in our modern context). We will review the literature on how herbal bitters, via T2R receptor activation, exert both local and global effects on mucosal immunity (including microbiome modulation), inflammation, smooth muscle tone, secretions, liver function, detoxification via efflux pumps, and more.

Vitamin D & Calcium Regulation

If there were vitamin Emmys, vitamin D would definitely rack up several trophies at this year's ceremony. Is the hype real, or are we all jumping on a bandwagon? In this lecture, we'll quickly review vitamin D's many roles in the human body. Next, we'll learn more about supplemental vitamin D, including what we can and cannot learn from lab tests, when and how supplementation may be appropriate, and what factors clinicians should consider when recommending higher doses - especially over prolonged periods of time. Safety considerations will be emphasized. You'll leave with a better sense of when/how/why to recommend supplemental vitamin D.

Adaptogens & the HPA Axis with David Winston

In our modern world we live incredibly busy and stress filled lives. Chronic stress and the resultant elevation of stress hormones such as cortisol have been shown to be an initiator and cofactor for much of our chronic degenerative disease. In addition to stress reduction techniques, healthy relationships, a good diet and adequate sleep, another important method for reducing stress and enhancing well-being is the use of adaptogenic herbs. In this class we discuss the definition of adaptogens, what is and is not an adaptogen, how these herbs work, the rational and effective clinical use of the different adaptogenic herbs, the unique qualities of each herb and how they can improve cognitive function, restore immune and endocrine balance and promote increased mental and physical well being. We will also discuss companion herbs used with adaptogens such as nervines, nootropics and restorative tonics.
