Supporting the Cardiovascular and Immune Systems with 16 Foundational Herbs
You don't need to have taken Herbs 101 to join this class!
You're not the only one!
Herbs are a natural complement to the work we do as nutritionists, and it's important to understand how to incorporate them into your work (and life!) safely and appropriately.
This course is designed specifically for clinical nutritionists who want to begin (or continue) working with herbs. We’ve selected 16 of our gentlest and safest herbs for us to explore together. If you become comfortable with just these 16 herbs, your tool chest will expand substantially.
You’ll learn to understand these herbs not just on an academic level, but by personally interacting with them. Herbalists Linden de Voil and Camille Freeman share their clinical experiences, and we’ll learn more about their historical applications and preparations.
We’ll move outside the “take this herb for that” model and talk about how these herbs can be called upon to support people even when they don’t have a diagnosis or when their situation is quite complex.

Linden is a clinical herbalist, writer, and professional plant-and-human-health nerd. She was initially drawn to herbalism as a practice for community care, health advocacy, and personal empowerment, then discovered the deep joy of connecting with plants.
Linden has been studying and working with herbal medicine since 2008, with ten years of clinical work in naturopathic wellness centers, private practice, and now in a community teaching clinic. She is a professional member of the American Herbalist Guild, and a core faculty member of Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism.

Hi. I'm Camille Freeman (she/her). I've been in practice as an herbalist and nutritionist for more than 20 years. I love teaching herbal classes for nutritionists because I know how much of a difference herbs can make & how hard it can be to find reliable information that's clinically-relevant.
I taught at the university level for almost 17 years, having been a professor at the Maryland University of Integrative Health until leaving to spend more time at Bloom and Grow in 2025. I believe strongly in creating courses that are fun, practical and suited to adult learners with complex lives. I'd love to work with you in this class!
You'll get to taste and experience each one + learn how to match these herbs with people who might benefit.
Learn how clients can access herbs that are properly identified and prepared appropriately.
We'll go over safety concerns for each herb + you'll learn how to look these up on your own in the future.
We'll discuss how to find information about herbs and how to deepen your understanding.
If you'd like to try out each of our 16 herbs, you'll have the option to order an herbal kit and/or purchase access to the herbs on your own. We'll have a "tea of the week" to try + a bonus lab where you'll learn how to make some of our more common herbal products - syrups, infusions, decoctions, pastilles, and more. This is entirely optional, but highly recommended.
You'll have indefinite access to the course content. Folks who want NPCE/CEU certificates will need to complete weekly quizzes and apply for the certificate by the end of 2028.
Class begins on March 8, 2026; you can register even after this date!

Nope. This course is specifically designed for nutritionists. If you are a student nutritionist, you are welcome to enroll, and you might be better off wrapping up your current studies and taking this course once you're in practice unless you happen to have a bunch of extra time on your hands - not common for students, in my experience
I would set aside about 3-4 hours per week x 8 weeks if you want to do the optional "tea of the week" and bonus labs. There are three 20-minute lectures each week, a 1-hour recording of the mini lesson + Q&A, an optional quiz, and time for you to research/complete a worksheet on 2 herbs per week. The bonus labs & tea-making will add around an hour per week (some weeks less).
Yes. If you pass all 8 quizzes, you will receive a certificate for 16 continuing education credits. I am pre-approved to offer NPCE with the American Nutrition Association so these will count for anyone with the CNS credential. Quizzes cover the material in the pre-recorded lessons and the live session. Quizzes must be submitted by December 31, 2028 to receive credit. This course may count for other CEU credits as well, depending on the organization.
We have a discussion forum within the course, which is a great way to share your experiences and ask questions. When you register, you'll also be invited to attend monthly Q&A calls with Camille for 6 months. These are open to people in any current courses, and you are welcome to bring any questions from this course to these calls.
The herbal labs and the "tea of the week" are entirely optional. I highly recommend getting to know these herbs personally, and if you aren't able to work with some/all of these herbs due to allergy/sensitivity, contraindications, finances, time, etc. that is completely fine. All exercises and activities are optional (and at your own risk!). I'll share information about cautions/contraindications that go along with each herb, and you can decide if you'd like to try it.
I can't say for sure, as I am not a lawyer and circumstances will differ in each state/locality and depending on your license/certification if relevant. Herbs and herbal products are generally considered dietary supplements and therefore fall into the realm of nutrition work according to most definitions. It is always illegal (in the US) to imply or state that herbs are used to treat or prevent any disease or condition. In this course, we aren't using that model at all. We will be discussing how to use herbs to support people.
Indefinitely. I don't like to say "forever" because one never knows. As long as I keep Bloom & Grow open, however, you will have access to the course contents. People who want to get CEU certificates will need to complete the quizzes and apply for their certificate by the end of December, 2028. However, everyone will have ongoing access to the course content indefinitely.
All videos include closed captioning and a corrected transcript. During live Zoom sessions, we use Zoom's automatic captioning, which is mostly-but-not-entirely accurate (it's getting much better, though!). If you have accessibility needs, please reach out to me to discuss. We'd love to do whatever I can so that you can have an excellent experience.
If you choose to participate in the herbal labs & "tea of the week" activities (which are optional!), you will have the choice of ordering a herb kit, or getting the herbs on your own. We'll share a list of what's in the kit. The optional herb kit costs about $60 including s/h. In addition to the herb kit, you'll also want a few basic supplies like glass jars, common kitchen spices like thyme and rosemary, a French press or a teapot, and honey. (If you'd like to add a small French press to your herb kit order, you will have the option to do so!)
There are no required textbooks for this course, although we will recommend a few books that you may want to add to your shelf, depending on your interests and budget.
