I often get questions about whether I think someone should go back to school. You already know my answer, I'm sure. It depends.
Here are three things to consider:
๏ปฟ1) Is there a specific reason you need/want this credential or training?
If this is something that feels necessary to get where you want to go, amazing. If you've realized you don't have a defined skill that you'd like to have, and this training is about that, great! If you know there's a gap in your training and you need to fill it in to better serve your current clients, it makes sense.
Collecting degrees or credentials just because they sound interesting doesn't (usually) make sense. Sometimes, getting more training means you're avoiding the hard work of starting your practice or seeing clients. See point 3.
๏ปฟ2) Can you afford it, financially and otherwise?
After working in higher ed for decades, I can confidently say that a degree will take more time and money than you think. The same is probably true for most non-degree training programs. If you have access to plenty of money and plenty of time, and you're interested in learning - absolutely, do the program.
If not, weigh things carefully. Are you likely to earn more as a result of this program? (Often, you won't. Not that this is the only factor, but still...) Is it going to be worth the time and energy that will be required? Choosing a degree or program means you're choosing not to do something else with the time and money instead. For example: seeing clients/starting your practice, spending time with family, or resting/having leisure time. Make sure you're clear about what you're giving up before you decide.
๏ปฟ3) Do you want this credential or degree because you think it will help you feel more legitimate?
Collecting another credential almost certainly won't be the one thing you need to feel ready. Feeling ready, legitimate, etc. is an internal job. Read Radical Healership. Don't get a credential because of what others will think. If you already have the training you need to do your job, more letters after your name or more training isn't going to do the trick.
๏ปฟI recorded a podcast episode on this topic with a bit more detail and some reflections on my own experience earlier this week.
If you have a question you'd like me to answer in a newsletter or podcast, please reply and let me know. I'd love to help if I can.
Take care,
