Happy 2025
This week, I thought I'd share a few reflections on how things went with Bloom & Grow in 2024. I wavered on whether to send this out, as it seems a bit navel-gazy. But, I find it really useful to get the occasional behind-the-scenes glimpse at other people's practices, so I thought you might appreciate this as well.
If 2024 round-ups aren't for you right now, feel free to skip this one. I'll be back with a more standard newsletter next week
(I would recommend scrolling down to check out the upcoming events & recommendations, though, as there's some fun stuff there. Also, the 2025 immune system deep dive is open and early bird registration goes through Jan 6!)
2024 Bloom & Grow highlights:
- I wrote a book (!). Write Better Newsletters will be out on Jan 30. I started writing in Jan 2024, and it's just now become available for pre-order (links below). Writing, gathering feedback, and fiddling with self-publishing has been a major learning curve, but I'm very glad I did it.
- I quit my job as a professor to focus on Bloom and Grow. This felt like a huge leap. Letting go of the steady paycheck, the access associated with being part of a university, and the network of colleagues and professional connections was difficult, and I'm also very glad to be fully self-employed now. It continues to feel like the right decision for me.
- I'm proud of how the 2024 Nervous System Deep Dive turned out. We had fantastic guests teaching on migraine, ADHD, trauma, and anxiety/brain fog. I put tons of time and love into each of my lectures, and although they weren't perfect, I like to think that they were of use to folks who attended. The classes on Long COVID + GLP-1 receptor agonists were highlights for me.
- I continue to love running Monday Mentoring, which is a community of practice I created 4+ years ago because I wanted to be part of something like this and it didn't exist yet. I'm proud that I've been able to keep it going for all this time.
- Some teaching highlights were the fertility training for practitioners with Liane Moccia and the workshop I did last month on practical tips for running a clinical practice.
- I revamped my clinical offerings to create a package/setup that feels like I can do my best work. (Check it out if you want to see what I came up with.)
- I asked some very cool people to join an accountability group with me, and they said yes. If you've been here for a while, you know I love a good accountability group. Makes such a difference!
- I led an in-person retreat for practitioners along with one of my very best friends, Bevin Clare, for the first time! We loved the group and the process, learned a lot, and are planning to do it again in 2025.
Things that could have gone better in 2024:
- I had the best of intentions when it came to my podcast, but I didn't manage to publish episodes regularly at all. One of my hopes for 2025 is to be more consistent here.
- I forgot to promote one of my deep dive lectures, so absolutely no one signed up other than folks in the full program (it was the lecture on Parkinson's, which I thought turned out really well!).
- I did not do as much as I usually do to meet folks who don't already know about my work. I need to do more marketing and promotion this year.
- Had my first ever Stripe dispute in 15+ years in practice (which wound up being a mistake, but was still stressful!)
- My childcare situation was rocky, I did not have stable/predictable working hours, and it was a challenge to find personal time.
- Financially B&G made more money this year than last but also had more expenses than usual. This + quitting my full-time work as a professor means things were tight, money-wise. My biggest expenses other than paying myself & others were book-related (hiring designer, editor, software, etc), software (Zoom, course management, etc.), and working with a lawyer to set up an S-Corp, do contract review, etc.
The thing I'm most grateful for is the chance to work with so very many people who are kind and thoughtful and committed to doing great work in the world. Getting to know newsletter readers, folks in my programs, 1:1 clients, and colleagues is my absolute favorite part of running a business, and I feel lucky/excited to keep going in 2025.
Thanks for being here. I hope your 2025 is full of mystery and magic.
Take care,
Camille
