It's always nice to shop locally for special occasions and holidays. That's not always realistic, though. If you've run out of ideas, here are some of my go-to gift suggestions. These are appropriate for holidays, birthdays, and other occasions. I've highlighted consumables, experiences, and things made by small businesses. None of these are affiliate or referral links. If you know of something I should add to the list, please let me know ✨
Food/Edible Things
- Jacobsen Salt Co's infused sea salts are lovely & very giftable
- Penzey's Spices offer a bunch of gift boxes and single spices that are always high-quality and fresh.
- Racho Gordo dried beans make a fun and tasty gift. Also check out the Stardust Dipping Powder
- Diaspora Co. Spices are excellent, esp. their jaggery, pink garlic, and chai masala. Also check out their dish towels, which look so fun.
- Rasa herbal coffee alternatives are super tasty. I'm loving the Deep Dream Cacao right now. They also have fun french presses & bag clips that could be gifted.
- Luxardo cherries for the Old Fashioned or Shirley Temple lover or to drizzle over ice cream. These are fancy maraschino cherries. One year my sister got us a massive can of these, which lasted for 2 (3? 4?) years. So tasty.
Herbal & Body Care Products
- Earth Allies Flower Drops - "a daily flower bomb"
- Fat and the Moon offers lovely body care products, including their All Salve, bite & burn spray, lip and cheek stain, farewell funk foot powder and more. I LOVE their "I'd rather be parasympathetic" bumper sticker (sadly out of stock at the moment)
- Woodland Essence esp their balsam fir products 🌲
- Earth Harbor skincare is generally lovely. I love the Mermaid Milk
- Galen's Way topicals, esp Riot of Roses line
- Selkie Medicinals herbal body oils
- Avena Botanicals products, especially their rose line (rose petal elixir!)
- Marlowe soap bars are technically "for men" but really anyone could enjoy them, especially if you're trying to move away from plastics in personal care.
Bookish/Writing Gifts
- Books! Here are my recommendations. Maybe with a fun bookmark? Or bookplates?
- Notecards + stamps always make a nice gift for letter writers. You can buy or make these, or consider a subscription box like Lost Art or Snailbox to get cards + stamps delivered each month.
- Story Worth is a fun gift for a family member or elder. They send weekly prompts to your giftee and compile the responses into a print book, along with any photos submitted. (about $100) (A high end version of this is No Story Lost, where they will do phone interviews and write the book for you for a substantially higher price. Like $1500. I've used Story Worth & can recommend, have not tried No Story Lost.)
- Archer & Olive makes eco-friendly/ethically-crafted journals/notebooks & journaling-related products.
- Mayhem in the Library puzzle within a puzzle. There are 101 hidden book titles within the 1000-piece puzzle. We had a really fun time with this last year (and still haven't figured out a few of the book titles!) There's also a movie version. This would be great if you'll be visiting family for a while and need something to do while you're there.
- The Magic Puzzle Company also makes great puzzles! Or you can get a puzzle subscription here for the eco-friendly puzzler.
- Letterjoy is great for a history buff. They send weekly snail mail letters that are replicas of those from historical figures along with brief bit of context.
Clothing
- Alpaca Socks like these (or any alpaca socks!) are so soft and cuddly. Also, the walk-a-paca program would be a fun gifted experience...
- The Wardrobe Box for styled boxes of secondhand clothing. They donate a free box to someone in need for each box ordered. XS-4XL.
- Snag tights make a fun present if you loosely know someone's size - check out their seasonal & zodiac prints for extra fun. In a strange feat of physics, these tights somehow stay put without rolling down in irritating ways. Sizes 1-34.
- Taproot Threads offers recycled/organic clothing (and cloth napkins!) with plant prints on them. I love the yarrow and full moon print, but they're all lovely.
Other Ideas
- Tyler Thrasher moonbeam flowers - real flowers coated in a nontoxic glow-in-the-dark glaze. You can buy bouquets or single stems. These are so fun and pretty.
- What about a handmade mug + fancy coffee beans or cocoa/cider mix (or Rasa, above!)?
- Check Cognitive Surplus for sustainable sciency items. I particularly love the page flags, washi tape, and stainless steel water bottles.
- Seeds or bulbs + a gardening tool (a hori hori or nice gardening gloves!). In Virginia, I like Southern Exposure for seeds & Brent and Becky's for bulbs.
- Look for a felt wreath made by someone on Etsy (they have these for all seasons/occasions)
- Consider PaperKarma if you need a present for someone who's overrun with snail mail. It's an app to help stop junk mail. You take a photo of the mail you want to stop getting, and they do the rest. $25 for a year, gift subscriptions available.
- A Sky Map from the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State costs $12 for a year and shows a star map for each month's sky as well as moon phases, planetary sightings, etc. (you have to mail order it, just like old times!) You can start any time during the year. It's delivered quarterly.
- The Art of Soil makes soil-based ecologically friendly watercolors. These are pricey but gorgeous.
Things you can make
- Calendar with your own photos or a framed photo
- Cookbook of favorite recipes
- Fire cider
- Elderberry syrup
- Salve or herbal body oil
- Cloth napkins
- Vanilla extract and/or vanilla sugar
- Herbal honeys
Experiences
Offer IOU cards or gift certificates for any of these:
- Movie tickets + some food to sneak in (or popcorn + popcorn salt)
- Local horseback riding excursion
- Ropes course
- Massage or bodywork session
- Tarot reading
- Walking tour of city they live in
- Yearlong sub to a city-based scavenger hunt app (I've used Let's Roam in the past, and it's been quite fun. $80 for an annual subscription for all cities/hunts they offer for up to 6 ppl)
- Gift card to local craft store or art reuse store. We love the Art Hive here in Staunton.
- Smash room (in case you're not familiar with this, you put on protective gear and go smash things like old tvs, dishes, etc.)
- Escape room
- Sound healing session (or local sauna)
- Art class or forest bathing or herb walk
- Float tank
- Local wine/beer tasting event or cocktail/mocktail class
- Olive oil tasting
- Car detailing or car wash
Happy Gifting!
I'd love to know what you'd add to this list - particularly things that are consumable and/or support good folks.
Lastly, if you're looking for a non-Amazon option to create your own wish list, check out Things to Get Me, which lets you link to anything and/or provide general ideas without a specific product/link.
