My bookkeeper has a money podcast, and a few weeks ago he went on a small aside about how he's getting into composting. Eventually he wound up reflecting on the similarities between composting and running a business.

I love this analogy.

If you've tried to compost, you know that you can put virtually any organic materials in a big pile, and eventually they will turn into soil. The question is how long it will take and how smelly it will be in the process.

If you pay more attention to the components - getting a relatively balanced mix of brown and green materials - and turn it every now and then, you'll wind up with compost more quickly and with less odor. If you don't, you may need to wait years for anything useful to come out of your compost pile.

For a business, the same can be true. Your practice will work better if you have a nice balance between working with clients and marketing/admin. It helps a lot to breathe some space into your schedule - to metaphorically turn your compost pile by stepping away so that you come back refreshed.

The perfect balance depends on your climate, the ingredients in your pile, and how much time you have to wait. I'm finding it so very helpful to think about business building as akin to composting, where there are individual differences based on your specific situation, but trusting that if you have good intentions, fiddle around a bit with the ingredients, and give it some time, you're likely to wind up with something that makes the earth a bit better than it was before 🌍

Take care,

Camille
