I'm at the beach with my extended family this week, so I'm keeping today's message short and sweet.
Over almost 20 (!) years of clinical practice, one of the biggest things I've learned to ask myself before sending recommendation to my clients is: how can I make this more simple?
I am prone to overloading people with my many (MANY) ideas that may help them to feel better.
I've come to realize that it helps me to feel better when I do this - I've provided them with so much value! - but it doesn't necessarily serve the client. Even when clients appreciate a very thorough plan or protocol, I've found that the more complicated the plan is, the less likely they are to do it.
I now see it as one of my jobs as a practitioner to winnow down my recommendations to only the most important or relevant ones for this particular moment in time.
I have to remind myself of this repeatedly with pretty much all clients, because it's so easy and so tempting to share every idea and recommendation. For most new clients, my goal is to pick one or two dietary recommendations, one or two herbal/supplement recommendations, and one or two lifestyle recommendations. I write down the rest of my ideas in my "later list" in the client's chart.
Maybe this reminder will be timely for you, too. There's power in simplicity.
Take care,
Camille
