It's so hot here in Virginia that my brain isn't feeling very sharp
I thought - possibly incorrectly - that it might be helpful to share a bit about my work computer.
I used to have a fancy, relatively expensive laptop. It was light, and had a long battery life, and came with tons of computing power.
It stopped working after almost 7 years, just before I was scheduled to leave on a trip for several weeks.
I didn't have time to do my normal mildly obsessive research, so I decided to buy an inexpensive chromebook to take on the trip and deal with it later. The chromebook cost something in the range of $300. Maybe less, because I believe it was on sale.
That was in early 2021. I'm still using the chromebook whenever I'm not at home, which is quite often (50% of the time!)
It turns out that it works just fine for my needs. The camera isn't spectacular, but it gets the job done. It doesn't have tons of space, but everything I need is in the cloud. I've seen clients, taught classes, done extensive research for my Deep Dive series, designed web pages, worked on my book, recorded podcasts, hosted Monday Mentoring, and more with no problems.
I had assumed that since my entire income depends on my computer (and me, of course) that I should probably have a really nice one. But that's not been true. I love that I don't need to feel precious about my laptop.
This has been a useful reminder to think about whether I really need something before spending tons of money on it.
Take care,
Camille
p.s. I published another podcast episode about when it makes sense to start a separate business. Thank you to Oren for submitting a question! If you have a question you'd like me to answer on an upcoming episode, you can submit it on the new In the Clinic website.
p.p.s. In response to last week's newsletter about my minor superpower, I was asked what superpower I'd pick if I did get to choose. It's flying. I would love to be able to fly.
