Happy (belated) Equinox
๏ปฟFor a few weeks, it warmed up dramatically here. We're talking 80 degree days. Feeling too hot (!) when sitting in the sun. Having dinner on the screened porch. That kind of warm.
I've talked to multiple people around town who stored their winter clothes and got out the summer ones.
The issue: this week, the temps are back down. We're having lows in the 20s. Our last frost date is usually late April - mid May.
๏ปฟWhile it's nice to enjoy a warm spell, it doesn't really make sense to bust out the swimsuits and tank tops just yet.
I've noticed that running a business is a lot like this.
๏ปฟIf you don't take time to notice the big picture rhythms of your practice, it's easy to get carried away when things are busy or when they're super slow.
I often see people making dramatic changes in admin or marketing or flitting from one strategy to another based on a good/bad week or two.
Having a short-term dry spell with no new clients? If you don't have a bird's eye view, you'll be tempted to think nothing's working and it's time to try something new.
Busy week or two with more commitments than you can comfortably handle? You're liable to hire an assistant you can't afford or cut too far back the following week.
This can all lead to a very erratic, roller coaster-esque feel to your work. Which is exhausting.
๏ปฟOn the other hand, if you know that things tend to slow down (or speed up) in the spring, or if you know that a few busy weeks are almost always followed by several slow weeks, you can ride out the unusual waves without metaphorically getting out your summer clothes months too early.
Take this as a gentle nudge to spend a few minutes reflecting on any rhythms you're noticing in your practice on a weekly or monthly basis. (Also, write this stuff down!)
It makes a difference to look back on a full year's noticings so that you can be calmer and more intentional when there are unusual highs and lows in your practice.
Take care,
Camille
